birthday cake activity using light up LED 'candles'! Role play candle
blowing, sing happy birthday and decorate children's playdugh cakes in activities
that introduce electricity and circuits. Use 10mm LEDs, a battery pack +
safety
label, terminals, the information on conductive
playdough and safety advice on squishy-circuits to enjoy controlled illumination!

Build and decorate your playdough cake on a laminated
plate printable and have a cake core ready to act as an insulator - we used a selection of clear plastic bottle
lids, filled with playdough as a cake core so that the electric current was
directed from the batteries into one section of dough, up through one LED
lead, down the other and back into the dough, returning to the battery pack
to complete the light powering circuit.
To celebrate the candles being blown out, quickly remove a terminal from
the dough at the moment of puff. Once understood pass on the control
of this action to the children so they're able to break and restablish a
working circuit.
